The host is Swiss, was born and lived his first 33 years in a town and small cities in the German part of the Swiss Alps. He traveled around the world in several occasions in three years.
Besides Europe, He has traveled to China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Maldives, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Israel, Egypt, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina and of course, Chile. His studies of tourism are as a traveler. He is originally an electrical technician by profession and has worked for 15 years on projects for different companies for heating, air conditioning, renewable energy and energy saving.
The idea of building the hostel came to him in one of his trips outside Switzerland and the radical thinking about changing his lifestyle.
In 1999, he spent his Easter holydays in Ancud. When walking along the waterfront, he found a site in the heart of the city for sale. He called the owner, got together and after a month of negotiations he bought the ground. He went to Switzerland in three years to work and make some plans of the hostel with an architect friend.
In February 2002, back in Chiloé, he modified the project with the help of an architect in the region. Together with other teachers and carpenters, he began to build the New World Inn. Adapted to the customs and methods of work, he managed to finish the construction in January 2003. Immediately started to receive tourists, he thanked to the excellent location on the waterfront that allows you to have a sea view in all rooms.
Obviously the first three years were extremely hard. Not knowing how the business would be, he did everything alone (with his ex-lady, who returned to Switzerland in 2005). He started contacting a few hostels and lodgings in the region to exchange brochures. Some of them are his good friends now. There is a booklet "Hostels in Chile" on www.backpackerschile.com.
In 2007, his hostel became one of the first certified accommodations in the region (According to the Chilean standard 2960 Of. 2006). Sernatur (National Tourism Service) presented him a distinction in the tourist business category by the contribution to the development of tourism.
